Triple D Sliced Another Way

So many of us are big fans of Diners, Drive-ins & Dives on the Food Network, it’s a fun show without a doubt, and host Guy Fieri has cashed in big-time, with this show, other shows and a growing restaurant empire.

The restaurants and meals featured on this show are mostly super-rich, over-the-top affairs that make for great television and promote the Standard American Diet Gone Wild, with the help of fast cars and occasional rock stars.

But, these days we are asking more of our stars and role models, especially when it comes to our health. You probably heard that Fieri’s colleague Paula Dean, herself a popular Food Network star, finally came clean about her health. She is suffering from Diabetes and is overweight, as a result of practicing what she preaches, with lunches such as double bacon burgers between grilled cheese sandwiches, and the like.

While her solution, which is drawing attention to and supporting the Diabetes control establishment is not perfect, at least people can see that eating as she advocates, will lead to poor health. However, the same cannot be said for Fieri and his show, known as Triple D. Ironically, Fieri himself grew up in a family that espoused a largely vegan macrobiotic way of eating. So he knows better. But he also knows what sells, and we are still living in a free country.

But we wonder if his show get some ribbing (no pun intended) by the food police (myself included), with the purpose of getting a similar disclosure of Mr. Fieri’s health problems, and his warnings to an audience that clearly has difficulties making wise decisions for itself.

Perhaps he should do an episode entitled Diarrhea, Diabetes, and Dysentary, and show the bathroom and healthcare issues that he, his featured cooks, establishments and their fans are introducing to the public. That would add a whole new dimension to his “we’re rolling out” line.
